We can help.

West Virginia Women Work! provides a career advising program to assist women in becoming economically self-sufficient. Knowledgeable staff will work with you to:

  • Decide what is the best career path for your skills and interest.
  • Look at entry-level positions in a company that you would like to work and what the qualifications are.
  • Explore all of the training opportunities in North Central WV.
  • Determine how you can afford to go back to school.
  • Help you overcome barriers to employment.
  • Help develop job search techniques.
  • Help you write a resume and practice for interviews.

West Virginia Women Work! also maintains relationships with representatives from several of the companies in North Central WV and receives job postings from these companies. West Virginia Women Work! strives to acquire the most up to date and accurate information on the best employment opportunities tin North Central WV so we can pass that information on to you.

Have you ever thought about entering a career in the skilled trades? Some careers to think about.

Asbestos Worker/ Insulator: Insulation of both industrial and commercial mechanical systems including: pipes, boilers, ducts, storage tanks, and equipment.
Entry Level Wage: $12.30/ hour
Experienced Wage: $21.81/ hour

Boiler Maker: Make assemble and repair boilers, steel pressure vessels, vats, and tanks according to blue prints. They align sections, cutting tubes from metal, drilling holes, and bolting, riveting or arc welding the sections together.
Entry Wage: $17.90/ hour
Experienced Wage: $26.05/ hour

Bricklayer: Construct and repair walls, partitions, arches, fireplaces, chimneys, and other structures from building materials such as brick, structural tile, concrete cinders, glass, gypsum, and terra cotta. Work in commercial, industrial, and residential settings.
Entry Wage: $11.34/ hour
Experienced Wage: $18.62

Carpenter: Construct, erect, install and repair structures in wood and steel framing. They erect framework in buildings, install trim work, and hardware as well as building forms for concrete work in commercial buildings and heavy highway work. Carpenters not only build large commercial buildings but also construct bridges, retaining walls, tunnels, and drainage structures on the highways.
Entry Wage: $8.93/ hour
Experienced Wage: $15.88/ hour

Cement Masons: Smooth and finish exposed concrete surfaces including: walls, floors, steps, sidewalks, driveways, and roads. Spread freshly poured concrete, level, smooth, and shape the surface, repair holes and cracks and grind surfaces.
Entry Wage: $10.31/ hour
Experienced Wage: $18.67/ hour

Dry Wall Finishers: Seal joints between plasterboard and other wall surfaces for painting or papering; mix seal components by hand or with electric mixers and spread over joints, press paper tape over joints, spread and smooth cementing material over tape, float cement over entire wall surface.
Entry Wage: $9.51/ hour
Experienced Wage: $17.37/ hour

Electricians: Lay out, install, maintain, and test electrical wire systems, fixtures, and apparatus and control equipment for heating, lighting, communications, power, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems in homes or commercial buildings.
Entry Wage: $12.94/ hour
Experienced Wage: $22.67/ hour

Iron Workers:Fabricate, erect, assemble, and install fabricated structural metal products in industrial, commercial, or large residential buildings. Erect steel framework on bridges, and buildings, set up rig hoisting equipment, assemble and install grills, canopies, metal stairways, floor gratings, iron ladders, metal window sashes and doors, decorative iron railings and gates.

Laborers: Involved with most phases of the construction industry. Laborers perform a variety of assigned tasks, which may include: soil compaction, trenching and shoring, traffic control, air tool operation, and demolition.
Entry Wage: $8.43/ hour
Experienced Wage: $16.44/ hour

Millwrights: Construction mechanics; leveling, aligning, moving and setting up pieces of large machinery and heavy equipment according to layout plans and blueprints. Take apart and reassemble equipment.

Operating Engineers: Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment including: cranes, backhoes, loaders, scrapers, bulldozers, and rollers used in construction buildings, roads, dams, and bridges.
Entry Wage: $11.04/ hour
Experienced Wage: $19.00/ hour

Painter: Prepare wood, metal, or masonry surfaces for painting. Mix paints and apply paint using brush, roller, or spray gun.

Plasters: Apply and smooth plaster to interior walls and ceilings, apply spray fireproofing to steel in commercial buildings, apply stucco and synthetic stucco finishes to exteriors of buildings and cast ornamental designs in plaster.

Plumbers/ Pipefitters: Install, repair, and alter pipe systems for water, gas, sewage, and drainage systems. They also install lavatories, toilets, showers, kitchen fixtures, drinking fountains and laundry equipment. Work on high and low pressure pipes for power station, refrigeration, air conditioning units, and heating systems. Entry Wage: $10.28/ hour Experienced Wage: $21.86/ hour

Teamsters: Operate a variety of trucks including: flat beds, tandems, ready-mix and dumps.
